Barbara Brown, Extension Nutrition Specialist, cooks us up a delicious fennel and mushroom soup/stew that is great for the chilly weather approaching. We sit under the shade with Garden Blogger, Dee Nash, in her yard to talk about some of her garden experience. The Bear Claw takes the place of your hands so that you have more surface area to pick up more garden debris while you work. Laura Payne, Extension Associate and OKG Assistant Producer, shows us another cool tool that she finds useful in the garden, the Bear Claw. This time we are looking at a design that he calls 'Bunker Planter'. Steve Upson, Senior Horticulture Consultant at the Noble Research Institute, is repurposing tires and turning them into raised beds. We transition from warm to cool season turfgrass, look at fall flowers and trees, and prep our vegetables gardens by plating cover crops. We check out a different kind of livestock at Vermico Farms with Owner and General Manager, Mike Adel, who gives us the inside look at how worm castings are produced for use of soil enrichment in the garden. Hundreds of praying mantis babies hatch from an ootheca, a type of egg mass made by any member of several different species, including mollusks, mantises and cockroaches. We meet with Andrine Shufran, Extension Specialist and Director of Insect Adventure, to learn how praying mantises are born. We travel to OKC and visit with Maureen Heffernan, President and CEO of the Myriad Gardens and Scissor Tail Park Management, to check out the progress of the renovation of the Crystal Bridge Conservatory. The further south it is, the more eucalyptus is a perennial.
In colder climates, above cold hardiness zone 9, eucalyptus will grow as an annual. Host Casey Hentges explains how even though eucalyptus is a tropical plant, it can thrive in the Oklahoma landscape as an annual.
